Eddie

ALEX’S FAMILY WAS A trip. He was right, they were hungry for grandchildren. We all went to the rodeo and took the boys around to meet the different performers. Alex introduced them to the head rodeo clown, who was on break at the time. I heard the man talking to the boys about tricks of the trade... “You have to make sure you have an exit plan before you distract the bulls,” he said, and I chuckled at how serious the kids were taking in the man’s advice.

When we got home, they told the Zitlals all about him and reiterated his advice, like at any moment they were both going to become rodeo clowns.

Everyone enjoyed the rodeo so much that Alex’s father announced the entire family, who were all on his payroll, were going to Orlando and Disney World. “We’ve been needing a family vacation, and I was already going to force everyone to take time off before Ellen gives birth, so this is a perfect time to do it,” señor Zitlal said. “Besides, Alexandro has to go to Saint Augustine and finish up his work and then he can meet us at Disney World. That way the boys have plenty time to enjoy it.”

They rented hotel rooms right on the grounds. I wasn’t a savvy traveler, but the rooms were huge, and luxurious. The service was excellent and reminiscent of swanky hotels you saw on television. I could only guess this all cost a pretty penny. I struggled with my pride during the trip, because they pretty-much refused to let me pay for anything. I felt like I was taking advantage, and when Alex got back from Saint Augustine, I told him it was too much.

“My father is one of the tightest penny-pinchers to walk the Earth,” he told me. “If he is spending money on you, it’s because they’re all enjoying you and the kids. They need this, Eddie. My dad had his heart attack, and now they are about to become grandparents.

“We usually do a family vacation, every year about this time too, and so I’m sure Mama and Papa just figured this was the perfect time. Besides, Ellen, Francesca and I have all talked about it. The parents need some downtime to adjust. I know it’s uncomfortable, and I apologize, but if you can just let them do this, I promise it is doing more for them than you realize. Besides, they can afford it, trust me.”

“It doesn’t take the sting out of it, though. I’m not a rich man, Alex, but I’m not someone who takes advantage of my friends either.”

“That matters, and I’ll share a secret with you, if my parents thought you were someone who’d ride their good intentions for your own self-interest, they wouldn’t have offered to bring you here.”

With a sigh, I gave in. “Tell me something your parents appreciate or need. Anything that I can do to repay them.”

Alex thought for a moment. “I’ll tell you what, I’ll ask my sisters and see what they say.
